Hormonal Imbalance

A hormonal imbalance can lead to all kinds of health and beauty issues, from acne to weight gain. Your hair can also be affected. 


Hormones play a big part in regulating the growth cycle of your hair. Oestrogens are good for your hair and help to keep hairs in their growth phase for the optimal length of time. Androgens are less hair-friendly and can shorten the hair growth cycle.


An excess of androgens, which can be caused by an endocrine disorder, such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, can cause hair loss. How much hair you lose can come down to your genes. If you have a genetic predisposition to follicle sensitivity, a hormonal imbalance may affect your hair more. 



Excess stress can make your hair fall out. This happens because stress can raise androgen levels, which causes hair loss. Stress can also cause other scalp issues, such as dandruff, and cause problems like disrupted eating habits and struggles with your digestive system, all of which can have an impact on your hair. 


Iron Deficiency/ Anemia

One of the most common causes of hair loss in women is iron deficiency. Iron is needed to produce hair cell protein. Without iron, your hair will suffer. If you’re worried about your iron levels, you should speak to your GP. They may refer you for a blood test to confirm whether you need treatment. 


Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

Your thyroid gland helps to regular your metabolism by controlling the production of proteins and tissue use of oxygen. An imbalance in your thyroid can affect your hair follicles. If hypothyroidism is left untreated, it can cause anemia, which can also affect your hair. 


Vitamin B12 Deficiency

A lack of vitamin B12 can make you feel tired and low on energy. It can also have an impact on your hair. 


A deficiency of B12 can cause hair loss as it can affect the health of your red blood cells, which carry oxygen to your tissues. This deficiency can be common in vegans, as most B12 comes through animal proteins. If you’re vegan, a supplement may be a good idea to make sure you’re getting enough B12.
