From the beginning of my pregnancy I’ve been adamant that the most important lesson for me to teach Madison as she grows up is how to swim. Having had my Dad teach me from such a young age and knowing how important swimming is as a life skill, teaching Madison to swim has been something Steve and I have both wanted to start as early as possible. You may have already read my last blog post on this topic where we mentioned that we were Konfidence Swimologists for 2018, but I thought I’d just reiterate the importance of baby swimming lessons again because it’s just so damn important! Swimming is not only a fun thing for you and your baby but it’s also a major life skill. Being able to swim could save your baby’s life and should he/she ever get themselves into a situation in water, they’d be able to swim and know what to do. Baby swimming lessons are something Madison and I have only just started thanks to Konfidence (although we’ve taken her swimming every week since she was 4 weeks old) and I thought I’d give you a little update on how her first two sessions went.
We swim with AquaTikes (a Konfidence approved swim school) at the gym we’re already members of and originally we started off in the baby group which is ages 0-13 months. We had a great first session and Madison loved splashing around, swimming to the rope and back and showing off her amazing underwater skills – it does not phase her one bit! The other two babies in the group though were very little and didn’t really like it, so being as confident as she is in water, we were moved up to the Mini Tikes class which is aimed at babies 9-24 months. As Madison has only just turned 9 months (5 days before her first lesson) we tested the waters in Tiny Tikes, but think the best decision definitely was to move her up.
Today we have just had our first Mini Tikes session and Madison really loved it. There were a few moments where I think she got a bit overwhelmed and started clinging to me a bit more (which is so unlike her) but overall she loved splashing, swimming in circles and playing with the toys and cups. Swimming under water, having water poured over her head and splashing has absolutely no affect on her whatsoever and she’s happy as Larry when we’re in the water! I am really excited to see how she progresses over the next few weeks of the term and see how much more confident she becomes in the water. Of course, Steve and I will continue to take her on her own too and who knows, hopefully she’ll be swimming on her own before we know it!
I’ll update you all soon on how we get on with the rest of our baby swimming lessons this term!
